I have a kid on a softball team named after the North Carolina Tarheels. She's a little kid and doesn't know what things like "Tarheels" are. I'm a big kid, and I didn't know either, so I looked it up, and I thought it was pretty cool.
Thanks to Wikipedia, I now know:
Because the exact history of the term is unknown, many legends have developed to explain it. Many believe it to be a nickname given during the U.S. Civil War, because of the state's importance on the Confederate side, and the fact that the troops "stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels".
How cute is that?
One of the coaches on her team also recently quite artistically chalked the North Carolina letters in the infield dirt at the last game. I thought that was cute, too. Then it snowed at the game. That was kinda cute. Then we won, that was the cutest. Good thing those softball girls stuck around, even in the snow, (teeny snowflakes) like they had tar on their heels - surely that's why then won.
