such a sweet gift

My parents came over tonight to give us a gift for our recent anniversary - our 10th. They pulled a big planter into our house with a small dolly, and planted in it was an olive tree and a piece of metal that my mom had hammered in the words to Psalm 52:8. It was SO sweet. Already has a home out in the backyard. I LOVE IT, mom and dad, thank you.

My dad asked before they left if I had read the card that came with it. No way. I'm smart enough to know I will cry at ANY card my parents write because they ALWAYS write sweet things from the heart, so I NEVER read that kind of stuff in front of them anymore. I had already cried when they gave me an olive tree! Ugggh.

But a few minutes ago, after they left, I opened the card - sweet as always. What was with the card, a poem, just made me so happy for the mom I have. She wrote a poem for us! If you know my mom, you know she's one of THE most creative and artistic folks on the planet, but a poem? She always writes sweet things, often rhyming, in my cards, and has my whole life. But this blew me away, so I want to share it here.

A Decennial Anniversary
Ten years already?
How can that be?
That means you were married
before there was Wii.
When one gallon gas
was just one ninety five
and Ted Williams and George Harrison
were still alive
When Gore was called winner
late at night,
but by the next morning,
Bush won that fight.
When the Twin Towers
still reached the sky,
before thousands of people had to die.
When X-Men and Gladiators were so hot,
and we Met the Parents and ate Chocolat.
Third Eye Blind, Creed
and Blink 182,
Vertical Horizon and Foo Fighters, too.
They sang about Kryptonite and Californication,
Ricky Martin's She Bangs played on every station.
X-Bx, the GameCube and Playstation 2,
Mandalay Bay, the Venetian were all new.
The Giant's Jeff Kent was the year's MVP,
the summer olympics were held in Sydney.
Another little Sidney, just a gleam in mom's eye
Lissy and Jack
still in a cabbage patch in the sky.
Ten years, a decade
as man and wife,
may your marriage be blessed
for the rest of your life.
Thanks guys.
Thank you my dear sweet Mutti.
