Wow what a storm!!!

We had a 45-minute wild storm roll through here at about 3:30 or 4 p.m. today. It added a lot of drama to an otherwise normal, boring-ish day! The wind, the rain, the hail, the lightning, the booming thunder - at some points I was even scared, as I was telling the girls to NOT be scared! Our backyard flooded and streamed out our front yard to the street and the street was a river, pulling our garbage cans with it, since it's trash day around here! Our power went out while I was standing in the garage, with the garage door half opened, to film the bizarre weather. Obviously, once the power went out there was no way to get the garage door down without doing it manually, but my car was in the way and the door was only HALF open, so I couldn't move my car. SO, I had to climb to the top of my car and manually unhook the garage door to the opening mechanism, then close the door manually. It was interesting. Made me feel really handy - kinda reminded me of a modern day version of when the characters from Little House on the Prairie encountered a storm or blizzard or something and had to hunker down after locating all their animals and locking down their shutters. I have to admit, it was fun.

Fall is coming

Ah, I love the feeling of our house now that the girls have started school. Sid has real homework to do, due each Friday in a packet, and Alyssa has "pretend" homework that I make up for her, since her preschool doesn't give out homework. Last night at the table, watching them finish their work and chit chat back and forth was so adorable. It reminded me of fall afternoons and nights at home when I was little - homework is just such a huge part of your life back then (for some of us....). I can't wait for it to cool down so I can make some big pots of somethin' in the crock pot and have my house smell like meat and potatoes and baked stuff and just let the fall simmer in after this weird heat we're having. Here are a few pictures of the girls doing their homework last night, and of them talking to Annie (their cousin) on the phone - such little socialites!
